James Toback On Exposed

Here are several interview clips with James Toback from 1983. He is an open, combative and honest guy and these are all really fascinating to watch. I'm grateful to the person who posted these on YouTube because these are not your typical puff piece interviews.

This final clip is the most Kinski specific of the clips but they are all worth watching.

Very, very interesting interview with James Tobak. It is too bad that the film is not nearly as smooth as his interview. This was certainly Nastassja's film because he had written it expressly for her. Somewhere in the hinterlands of the Internet there was a report that Tobak wanted to cut the dance scene and told her so because it was too expensive to do - $5K worth at which she point she pulled $5K out of her purse and told Tobak to put it back into the film. This particular sequence shows the free spirit of the Elizabeth Carlson character and although it did not really advance the story, was critical to help establish her character. In some respects, the opening sequence of the bombing of the Parisian restaurant is by far the best shot one. After that the quality of the film never comes close to that quality level. Tobak wore three hats for this film: sole writer, sole director, and producer. So what is up on screen is entirely his own doing. In hindsight, it would have been much better if he had hired a better director of photography instead of Henri Decae who just seems to be going through the motions and is not particularly inventive. It would have been extremely interesting to have had someone like Michael Ballhaus as the DP.

I've heard that story about the dance sequence..thank God it is in there. I have to disagree about Decae though. I really like the work he delivered for Toback...obviously Ballhaus would have done great things with it too but I think it looks great the way it was shot.
Thanks for your well thought out comments...much appreciated.

Wow Sara,
More info please...that is amazing. Was this at a festival of some sorts...was Kinski introduced? I'd love to hear more...thanks.

Ah yes! I actually hit return too soon and wanted to say more! Last night at the New Beverly Cinema here in LA James Toback came to do a Q & A for a double feature of Fingers & Exposed. Asking him the questions prior to the screening was Quentin Tarantino and they started talking about the dancing sequence in her loft and James announced that Natasha was there! I stumbled upon your page last night and still had it open and thought you'd like to know. It was a nice suprise...

Thanks so much Sara...that is seriously amazing. What an incredible double feature to see. I always thought there was kind of bad blood between Toback and Kinski so this is very cool to hear. Thanks so much for the report. Great stuff...now if they would just get EXPOSED out on DVD!

It was truly great to be able to see both of them together and of course to have Toback there to talk about it! It definitely seemed like she was there to support him, in fact she came alone & later some of the staff had her sit with other people one of which who was Eli Roth. The theater wasn't that full! LA is truly magical...

Thanks again Sara...that is really something else. It does sound like she was there to show her support and it's great she got to sit close to Roth and hopefully Tarantino said hello as well. Hope she had lots of love and respect showered upon her. Thanks again for the notes...truly fascinating and I am extremely envious.
